Restoring a Piece of Calbourne's Heritage: The Winkle Street Sign Replacement

Island Carpentry was recently contracted to undertake a unique and meaningful project in the picturesque town of Calbourne on the Isle of Wight. This small yet significant task involved replacing the wooden information sign for Winkle Street, a cherished landmark in the area.

Winkle Street, often hailed as a hidden gem, is the pride of Calbourne. The charming 18th-century stone cottages lining this idyllic street have captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike, with their vibrant gardens and the peaceful flow of the River Caul Bourne just beyond. Artists, including the renowned Alfred Heaton Cooper, have found inspiration in its serene beauty.

The original wooden sign, which had dutifully served as a guide to this beloved street for many years, was unfortunately showing the ravages of time. Exposure to the elements had caused severe rot, making replacement necessary to preserve the welcoming spirit of Winkle Street.

At Island Carpentry, we took great care to honour the history and charm of this iconic location. We chose oak—a durable and timeless material—to craft a new sign and stand that would withstand the test of time. After constructing the new sign, we carefully transferred the original information plaque to ensure continuity.

This project, though small in scale, was a rewarding experience for our team. It allowed us to contribute to the preservation of Calbourne's heritage while showcasing our craftsmanship in a way that will be appreciated by many for years to come.

If you find yourself strolling through Calbourne, be sure to visit Winkle Street and see our work, a testament to both the enduring beauty of this quaint village and the skills of Island Carpentry.
